Mosaic Tiles Care And Maintenance
Post-Installation
The period after installation is the most important time for cleaning. Your space may have extra grout, dust and debris that can scratch your tiles. Avoid acidic cleaners since they can discolor your grout color. To clean properly, make sure you read the instructions that come with the grout you pick out.
Clean Spills Immediately
Depending on the mosaic tile material, spills can be a nuisance. Glass tiles can resist moisture, but stone is a little more susceptible. Either way, prevent stains by cleaning spills (both food and liquid) immediately after they occur.
Mopping
If you have mosaic tile floors, mopping can help keep them looking beautiful. Sweep the floors first, using a broom with soft bristles. Then use a pH neutral cleaner (following the same concentration instructions as with wiping) and water to mop the floors. You should let the cleaning agent sit on the floors for about 5-10 minutes before scrubbing with a mop. When you're done, rinse thoroughly and remove excess liquid.
Vacuuming
You can vacuum your mosaic tile floors to keep them clean if you prefer that over sweeping.
Don't Drag Furniture
Lift furniture when moving it on your mosaic tile floor. That way, the pieces won't scratch or mark your tiles. The same goes for moving items on mosaic tile counters. Making your mosaic tiles last a long time is easy when you care for them correctly.
The process of making ceramic mosaic tiles starts with choosing the right type of clay. The clay is then kneaded/compressed under high pressure to remove air and any impurities. This creates a pure mass ready for shaping.
For mosaic tile production, the clay is processed in a mould made of hard plastic. This is done for all of The Mosaic Factory’s mosaics, except natural stone mosaics. An alternative option is to make large pieces of ceramic from which smaller mosaic tiles are cut. The disadvantage of this is that the mosaic has less attractive edges and may break; mosaic tiles from a mould have a nice rounded edge and do not need to be cut.
After filling the hard plastic mould, the ceramic mosaic tile is dried to remove moisture and allow the clay to harden. After the drying process, the dried clay is ready to be fired in a so-called ceramic kiln or oven. The clay is fired at high temperatures (~1000-1200°C) which makes it hard, stay and also keep its shape. This process is called the biscuit firing. Chemical reactions occur, causing all the residual water to disappear and permanently turning the clay into ceramics.
The final step is the application of the glaze layer, called glaze firing. A thin layer of glaze is applied to give the mosaic colour, texture and protection. Again, the mosaic tile is fired in kilns after which it is ready after a period of cooling!
How to cut and install Mosaic Tiles
Step 1: Prep Your Work Area
Before all else, it’s important to make sure that the surface for the mosaic tiles installation is clean and smooth. Nowadays, the underlayment for mosaic tiles is cement board applied over a plywood subfloor. We recommend cutting and scoring your cement board so that it fits the area you’re planning to place the mosaic tiles perfectly and evenly.
Step 2: Plan Your Mosaic Layout
Now for a little fun! Before you go ahead and install mosaics into a backsplash, floor or commercial space, you’ll want to plan the layout. To do this, draw intersecting perpendicular lines from top to bottom to identify the flow.
Step 3: Start Attaching the Mosaic Tile Sheets
Ready to start? Now that the layout is planned, it’s time to get laying! Start by applying a layer of thin-set adhesive to one of the layout quadrants. Then, begin to work in sections of about 2 to 3 square feet. To do this, used a notched trowel. Be sure to consult your tile and thin-set to see what size trowel to use.
Step 4: Fill in First Quadrant
The next step is to fill in the sheet. Continue to fill the quadrant in the same way you just did in step 3. Use tile spacers to ensure the spaces are all even.
Step 5: Set The Tiles
Unlike traditional styles of tile, mosaics are prone to wave formation after laying. To avoid this, use a piece of plywood (8” square) and a rubber mallet. Tap the sheet down into the thin-set. Be sure to pay attention to the edge of the mosaic and make sure no rows are higher than the other and gaps are even throughout.
Step 6: Cut Sheets
As you approach the edges of one tile area, you may need to cut excess tile for an even lay. To do this, use scissors or a utility knife to cut along the mesh backing for a nice, even look.
Step 7: Cut Individual Tiles
As you go along laying the tile, you may need to cut individual pieces. This can be accomplished with a wet saw, if available to you, or a tile nipper.
Step 8: Complete Install
Once one quadrant is done, continue to fill the other three quadrants, using the same process outlined above and always starting from the center point outwards.
Step 9: Time To Grout!
After all the mosaic tiles have been laid and you ensured that gaps are even, edges are flat and no waves are on the surface, it’s time to grout. Follow the mixture instructions on your grout to ensure best results.
