Product Overview

Blue Emerald Granite belongs to the labradorite family - a plagioclase feldspar rock that displays labradorescence, a optical effect caused by light refracting through microscopic mineral layers within the feldspar crystals. The result is a surface that shifts in colour as the viewing angle changes: blue, emerald green, teal and occasionally gold flashes appear and disappear against a dark grey to near-black base.

This is not a dye, coating or print. The colour is structural - it is a property of the stone itself. Polished surfaces maximise the effect; honed surfaces suppress it. For a bathroom, this creates a design decision: polished vanities and tub decks for maximum colour play under lighting, honed floors for slip resistance with subdued iridescence.

Two commercial origins, one trade family. "Blue Emerald Granite" is a trade name applied to labradorite-family material from more than one source. Norwegian material from the Larvik region is typically a syenite with anorthoclase feldspar, while Malagasy material from Madagascar is a labradorite rock with more intense blue saturation and is often traded as Lemurian Blue. Both are sold as Blue Emerald, Blue Jade, Emerald Pearl or Labradorite Blue in the market. The difference matters at specification: Malagasy material is scarcer, mined in limited locations, and carries a premium. We confirm origin and block photographs before quotation.

Wet-Area Performance - What the Numbers Mean for a Bathroom

Granite is specified for bathrooms because the numbers hold up. Blue Emerald is no exception.

Property Value What it means in a bathroom
Water absorption (ASTM C97) 0.16 – 0.20% Effectively non-absorbent - water does not penetrate the surface
Density 2.70 – 2.85 g/cm³ Solid, heavy material - vanities and tub decks feel substantial underhand
Compressive strength 180 – 260 MPa Resists point loads - soap dishes, bottles, accidental impacts
Flexural strength 11.6 – 22 MPa Adequate for vanity spans when properly supported; tub decks require substrate support
Mohs hardness 6 – 7 Resists scratching from daily bathroom use - far harder than marble or limestone
Porosity Very low Resists moisture penetration and staining when sealed

Where the numbers matter most:

  • Bathroom flooring. Polished granite becomes slippery when wet. For bathroom floors, specify honed finish - the matte surface reduces slip risk while maintaining the stone's appearance. Tile formats typically 300×300mm, 300×600mm or 600×600mm, with a minimum 20mm thickness for floor installation.
  • Wall cladding and shower walls. Full-height slab cladding or large-format tiles. Blue Emerald is specified for shower surrounds, feature walls and full bathroom cladding where the stone's iridescence becomes the room's focal point. Sealing is required for all wet-area surfaces.
  • Vanity tops. 20mm is standard; 30mm for heavier use or where the edge profile requires additional material. Undermount sink cutouts are standard; the cutout is polished and the reveal set at 3–4mm.
  • Tub surrounds. A bathtub deck surround requires more than a flat slab. The stone must span the tub opening, resist point loading from the tub rim, and accommodate the tub's fixing and any deck-mounted fittings. 30mm thickness is recommended for tub decks unless a substrate and edge build-up are specified. Cutouts for the tub rim, taps and any deck-mounted controls are set from approved shop drawings - not improvised on site.
  • Exterior use. Blue Emerald granite's low absorption and density make it suitable for select exterior applications - cladding, outdoor countertops and pool coping - but bathroom applications are the primary interior specification. Exterior projects should be reviewed for climate-specific performance.

Tub Surround and Vanity Fabrication

Tub surround fabrication. The tub deck is not a simple rectangle with a hole. The fabrication drawing must account for: the tub rim profile and fixing method, the required overhang, tap and control positions, any deck-mounted spout, and the relationship between the stone deck and the surrounding wall cladding. We fabricate tub surrounds from approved shop drawings with ±1mm dimensional tolerance. Edges are polished to match the top surface. Where the deck meets wall cladding, the joint is set out at drawing stage to avoid a cut on site.

Vanity top fabrication. Single and double sink configurations. Undermount cutouts polished with a 3–4mm reveal. Pre-drilled 3-hole or 8-inch spread faucet holes. 4-inch attached backsplash and side splash options. Edge profiles: eased, bullnose, half bullnose, bevel, ogee. Drainage grooves can be machined into the surface where specified.

Wall cladding and shower panels. Full-slab panels or large-format tiles. For shower walls, panel joints are set out on the layout drawing, and the stone is sealed before installation. Book-matched panels available where the slab permits - though the iridescent pattern is non-directional, so book-matching is less critical than with veined marble.

Slab selection and approval. Because labradorescence varies between blocks - some slabs show dense blue flashes, others more emerald or silver - slab photographs or video are provided before fabrication. For projects requiring multiple vanity tops or tub surrounds from the same visual batch, slabs from the same block are reserved and numbered.

Typical Application

Kitchen countertops and islands. Blue Emerald Granite kitchen countertops take cutlery contact and daily spills without staining, thanks to Mohs 6–7 hardness and 0.16–0.20% water absorption. Specify 20mm for perimeter runs, 30mm for island tops where the edge profile is a visible detail. A polished finish brings out the blue-emerald labradorite flashes; leathered finish hides fingerprints in busy kitchens.

Bathroom vanity tops. A Blue Emerald Granite bathroom vanity top pairs a non-absorbent surface with a colour that shifts under bathroom lighting. Undermount sink cutouts are polished with a 3–4mm reveal, faucet holes drilled to drawing at 8-inch spread, and a 20mm slab finished with an eased or bullnose edge suits single and double vanity configurations.

Shower walls and full bathroom cladding. Full bathroom cladding in Blue Emerald Granite - shower surrounds, tub walls, vanity backsplashes - uses large-format slabs to reduce joint lines. The stone resists moisture penetration at 0.16–0.20% absorption, and sealing before installation protects the polished surface in continuously wet areas.

Bathroom flooring and wet areas. Labradorite granite bathroom flooring should be honed, not polished, because polished granite becomes slippery when wet. The matte surface reduces slip risk while the low-porosity stone resists moisture. Specify 300×300mm or 600×600mm tiles at 20mm minimum thickness over a proper floor bed.

Stair treads and risers. Blue Emerald granite stair treads and risers are specified at 30mm with a honed or flamed finish for grip. The nosing profile is cut to drawing, tread depth set to the stair design, and granite's 180–260 MPa compressive strength handles the concentrated point loads at the nosing edge.

Feature walls and reception backgrounds. On vertical planes - hotel lobby feature walls, reception backgrounds, fireplace surrounds - Blue Emerald Granite catches light at eye level, where labradorescence reads strongest. Full-height 20mm polished panels reduce visible joints, and the non-directional pattern needs no vein matching across adjacent slabs.

Bar tops and hospitality counters. Hospitality bar tops and counter fronts in Blue Emerald Granite resist spillage, glass rings and impact. A leathered finish hides marks better than polished stone, while 30mm thickness gives the counter visual weight in a public space. Polished surfaces suit low-contact display counters and back-bar panels.
